Gauteng To Get Another Multi-Billion Rand Train 2

What is it with Gauteng and expensive railway projects? Gauteng Finance and Economic Affairs MEC Paul Mashatile has announced the building of a R12 billion monorail linking Soweto and Johannesburg.

This one actually makes a bit more sense than the Gautrain (which links Johannesburg, OR Tambo Airport and Pretoria) as the Soweto Monorail will carry close to 1 500 000 people a day, compared to the Gautrain which will carry a pitiful 20 000/day.

And where are Cape Town’s monorails? Commuting is hell! A purely utilitarian/commuter one would be nice; one from the airport would be a bonus!

I 100% agree. Cape Town public transport is a complete joke. They desperately need a better public transport network (be it light rails or buses) in the coastal northern suburbs. If I worked in town I could never live in a suburb like Parklands. The traffic would give me a coronary.

We were also promised dedicated bus lanes on the N2 but those have yet to materialise. And taxi recapitalisation is hardly happening.
