Cape Town DA Coalition In Trouble 4

Posted by Farrel Wed, 17 Jan 2007 05:37:00 GMT

Mayor Helen Zille has ejected the AMP from the DA led coalition in the Cape Town city council for what she calls ‘blackmail’ after the AMP demanded that their councillor Badih Chaaban be made deputy mayor. When Zille refused the AMP began talks with the ANC which then prompted Zille to give them the boot. If the AMP do now join with the ANC it will reduce the DA coalition majority to one vote. With a by election in Hout Bay next month the ANC could draw level if they win that.

Correction: The DA coalition is already in minority, 103 votes against a potential 106.

Update: ID: DA approached us

Update: DA Mal weighs in.

Update: ID joins Zille camp

AMP has three Cape Town council seats. The MPG has already lost its majority.

    So now what?

Events have overtaken this thread, Farrel, as you demonstrate elegantly with no less than three updates!

I’m still stunned. Helen Zille is a total player, nobody can see her for dust. If you think you’ve won a game against her, you’ve already lost. Unbelievable.

Yeah she really is an adept mover. First she outstrategised De Lille after the local elections (nearly causing a revolt in the ID) and then when the DA coalition hit a snag the ID had no choice but to join. That they kicked the AMP out in the morning and had the ID in in the afternoon is equally impressive.
