Weekend News Snippets 1

  • There are still calls by some in the SACP for them to contest elections on their own ticket. Every time this comes up Jeremy Cronin gets another gray hair.
  • President Mbeki has stated that the Department of Home Affairs will try to make life easier for immigrants with scarce skills. No word yet on whether resident South Africans with scarce skills will be afforded the same courtesy.
  • Had an accident at work? Thanks to the example set by our own Minister of Public Enterprises Alec Erwin you can just plant that ‘Sabotage!’ seed of doubt. Who needs personal responsibility?

Your comment about making things easier for immigrants with skills is well taken.

A year ago Mbeki more or less admitted that Affirmative Action had been a failure, but there was nary a word about bringing back those South Africans who had run municipalities and local government reasonably efficiently prior to the deluge of Africanisation. Instead, a call for “skilled foreigners to help get South Africa’s moribund municipalities up and running.” (M&G 26/7/05)

Forgive and forget the past and work together for the brighter future for the rainbow nation? Not a chance, unless you are prepared to throw your ill gotten gains around in the right circles to curry influence and favour. And even then, you could be taken out by a skilled foreign hitman for getting too big for your boots.

Or maybe I have an overactive imagination.
